Microsoft Inks Its First Clean Energy Deal In Asia With Solar Project

Microsoft has agreed to purchase all of the renewable energy output from a 60 megawatt (MW) solar project in its first clean energy agreement in Asia.

The technology giant's agreement with Sunseap Group, Singapore's largest provider of clean energy solutions, will last 20 years.

The solar project, according to Microsoft, will be spread over hundreds of roofs across Singapore and will be the largest rooftop solar project to date.

In October 2017, Microsoft and General Electric (GE) entered into a 15-year power purchase agreement in Ireland. This agreement means that Microsoft will buy all the wind power generated in the new 37 MW GE Tullahennel wind farm in County Kerry. In November, the Swedish electricity company Vattenfall signed a ten-year agreement to strengthen Microsoft's international data center activities in the Netherlands using wind energy.

"We are well on our way to exceeding our goal of driving 50% of our global data centers with renewable energy this year," said Christian Belady, general manager of architecture and cloud infrastructure strategy for Microsoft. .

"Once the project is operational, the new solar project will bring to 860 megawatts Microsoft's global direct acquisition of renewable energy projects.

Microsoft Advances Several of Its Hosted Artificial Intelligence Algorithms

Microsoft Cognitive Services hosts the company's hosted artificial intelligence algorithms. Currently, the company has announced advances in several cognitive service tools, including Microsoft Custom Vision Service, Face API and Bing Entity Search.

Joseph Sirosh, who leads Microsoft's artificial intelligence efforts, defined Microsoft's cognitive services in a corporate blog post announcing improvements, such as "a collection of cloud-hosted APIs that allow developers to Add simple AI capabilities for vision, speech, language, knowledge and research into applications, devices and platforms such as iOS, Android and Windows. These services are separate from other Azure AI services designed for more practical developers. DIY.

The idea is to put this kind of advanced artificial intelligence tools within reach of scientists, developers and any other interested party without having to lift heavy loads to build models and get results with the countless phases of test usually involved. types of exercises

For starters, the company moves the Custom Vision Service from free preview to paid preview, which is the last step before it is generally available. Sirosh writes that this service helps developers easily train a classifier with their own data, export the models and integrate these custom classifiers directly into their applications, and run them offline in real time on iOS, Android and many other devices.

Andy Hickl, who works in the cognitive services group as group program director, says the tool is designed to help companies identify similar entities automatically, recognizing not only that an image is a dog. but it is a specific type of dog or dog that belongs to a particular person.

The Face API, usually available today, automatically identifies a specific person from a large number of people. With today's version, the tool allows developers to create groups of up to one million people. Hickl says it's important because so far, many facial recognition algorithms could only recognize a handful of faces, useful as far as possible, but not really scalable like that, he says.

Finally, the Bing Entity Search algorithm allows developers to insert Bing search results into any application. For example, you can retrieve search results from any tool that is restricted by a Bing entity, such as an image or a website. This tool is usually available today.

Microsoft Is Secretly Building A Slimmer, More Modern Version Of Windows

It is reported that the latest Microsoft internal project is a new, simplified version of the Windows code name 'Polaris'. This new version of Windows is not a successor to Windows 10, not in the traditional sense. Instead, it's an alternative operating system like iOS or Chrome OS: a lightweight operating system designed for devices such as laptops and 2-in-1 ultra-mobile tablets. According to Windows Central, this could be the future of Windows.

Very good, then, what is it? At this point, it seems that Polaris could support Windows 10 S, the small version of Windows 10 student that Microsoft uses to test the operating system's light waters.

microsoft window new update
Windows 10 S could be seen as a kind of test balloon here, with Microsoft pointing to the education market to see how a reduced Windows experience would happen with the average Windows user.

According to testimonials, Polaris aims to eliminate all legacy components that make Windows 10 an operating system with all the features in favor of a system designed around the basics, such as Chrome OS. An operating system designed for people who normally work from a web browser. The new Windows based Polaris would be faster, more agile and with much less luggage.

Polaris, according to Window Central, will be fully based on Microsoft's Windows Universal Platform, or UWP, which makes it a much more hospitable environment for existing UWP applications and potentially offers battery life and performance improvements.

"The current Windows shell is one of the key legacy components that Microsoft replaces in Polaris, as well as eliminating unnecessary and legacy Win32 components and applications such as Notepad or Paint, in favor of a UWP experience, such as Windows 10 Mobile. "Windows Central informs.

This is an interesting and certainly logical change with Microsoft's recent move towards unification of its Windows experience across all platforms, but it is unclear whether Polaris would eventually be widely adopted. Currently, Chromebooks offer an exclusive niche for light computing on the fly, and Windows 10 exists in its full version in laptops and mobile devices from top to bottom in the price spectrum without any problem. Removing features that promise marginal gains in performance and battery life may not be of interest to a laptop, tablet, or 2-in-1 user.
